Visiting Canada: Your Step-by-Step Guide
Planning a visit to Canada? Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process to make your travel experience seamless and enjoyable:
Do You Need a Visitor Visa to Visit Canada?
If you are not a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident, or a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you will need a Tourist Visa to visit Canada. However, if your Permanent Resident card has expired, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) instead of a Tourist Visa.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you do not need a Tourist Visa. Instead, you must obtain a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before your visit.
Visitor Visa Extension (Visitor Record)
Visitor Visas allow you to stay in Canada for up to six months. To avoid any difficulties, you should apply for an extension or Visitor Record at least one month before the expiry date. To be eligible for a Visitor Record, you need to provide enough documentation and information regarding your ties to your home country, the purpose of your continued visit, your financial capability, as well as your immigration history in and outside of Canada. During the processing of the extension, you will have implied visitor status in Canada.
Super Visa
Canada values family and offers a Super Visa that allows families to reunite for an extended period. Permanent residents of Canada can apply for a Super Visa, which permits their parents or grandparents to use the visa for ten years without renewal. The Super Visa allows them to stay for up to 24 months per visit, instead of six months like the Visitor Visa. Similar to the Visitor Visa, individuals with a Super Visa are allowed multiple entries until their visa expires.
